Vitrification

Vitrification is a combustion process utilising dried sewage sludge as the sole fuel that operates at high enough temperatures such that the ash melts and flows out of the combustor as a molten stream. It is then water quenched to provide a granular product containing the heavy metals unleachably fused within.

The high temperatures provide complete destruction of organic compounds including dioxins and staged combustion ensures low emissions of NOx and CO.

Energy is recovered and is sufficient to dry the sludge and provided it is over 18% solids, additional heat is available for other processes.
